Is it possible to buy Hello, Mrs before my wedding?
Absolutely! You can purchase Hello, Mrs anytime — whether it’s before or after your wedding. The info we gather to create your name change package is exactly the same either way. You’ll just start the name change process with your Hello, Mrs package once you receive your official marriage document. Most couples get their official marriage document about 1–2 weeks after the wedding.
Is it possible to buy now and finish filling out my kit later?
Yes, definitely! Your Hello, Mrs account never expires, so you can take as much time as you need to complete your online account. If you order the Hello, Mrs Box, we’ll ship it to you after you finish Step 3 (verify and submit) in your online account. If you choose the Print at Home package, you’ll be able to download your name change package right after Step 3. Plus, no matter which package you choose, you’ll always have access to the latest version of your name change package in your account.
LLC and Business Name Changes?
Your Hello, Mrs name change package will guide you through updating all your personal U.S. documents—like your Social Security card, driver’s license, passport, and personal accounts such as banks, credit cards, insurance, and travel programs. However, updating your business name (LLC, S Corp, etc.) isn’t included.
Updating your business’s articles of incorporation or operating agreement is usually optional because your records with the Secretary of State are tied to your Social Security Number, which doesn’t change with your name. For business name changes, we recommend contacting your state’s Secretary of State office for advice tailored to your situation.

How long will it take to change my name?
Most people complete their name change within 2 weeks to 3 months. How long it takes depends on how many documents and accounts you need to update and the steps you take. For example, whether you mail in or apply for your Social Security card in person, and whether you choose routine or expedited passport processing will affect the timeline. Your personalized Hello, Mrs package is designed to help you complete the process accurately and as quickly as possible.
Am I required to do anything before using Hello, Mrs?
All you need to get started is a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Hello Mrs is only for a last name change after marriage. We do not process divorce name changes or court-ordered name changes.

Am I going to have to pay additional fees?
The Hello, Mrs package is a one-time fee of $49 or $99 depending on the version you choose. Other than that, any government or agency fees are separate and paid directly to them. For example:
• Changing your name with Social Security is free.
• Passport renewals over a year old or first-time passports require a $130 fee paid to the U.S. State Department.
• If your passport was issued less than 12 months ago, updating it with your new name is free.
• Changing your driver’s license, vehicle title, or registration fees vary by state.

I moved (or am planning to move). Can I change my name and address at the same time?
Yes, absolutely! Your name change package will help you update both your name AND address on all your documents. If you’ve moved to a new state, the package will guide you through getting a new driver’s license and vehicle title/registration for your new state. You don’t have to update your name in your old state before moving — you can simply get a driver’s license in your new state with your new name by turning in your old one.
When should I order a Hello, Mrs name change package?
You can order Hello Mrs anytime before or after you receive your certified marriage certificate. Wait until you have the physical certificate before starting the last name change. If you are engaged, you can buy the kit before the wedding and start once you have the official marriage document, typically 1 to 2 weeks after the wedding.
Your Hello Mrs account never expires, so take the time you need to finish your online account. Whether you choose the Hello Mrs Box or Print at Home, you will always have the latest version of your documents in your account.

Is it possible to use Hello, Mrs to change my first name?
No. Hello Mrs is only for a last name change after marriage, using a certified marriage certificate. A first name change requires a court-ordered name change through your city or county courthouse, and we do not process those packages. If you have questions, email admin@hellomrs.co.

Do I need my Social Security number or any other sensitive information?
Not at all! We do not collect any sensitive personal details like your Social Security number, passport number, driver’s license number, or financial account numbers when creating your name change package. Your privacy and security come first.
Do you take care of everything?
Our service is here to help you every step of the way with your name change, but you will need to submit each application yourself. Government offices require that the person requesting the name change submits the forms to protect your identity.
In most states, you’ll have to visit the DMV in person to update your driver’s license. But everything else can typically be handled by mail, phone, or online.
Your package includes all the forms and easy instructions for Social Security, U.S. Passport, driver’s license, vehicle registration, voter registration, USPS, and all your selected personal accounts.

Why can’t you complete the entire name change process for me through Hello, Mrs?
For security reasons, you need to personally submit your applications. This is how government agencies protect your identity and make sure it’s really you making the request.
Is my personal information safe?
Absolutely. Our website uses 128-bit SSL encryption and is actively monitored for security. We follow the latest guidelines to keep your info safe. And remember, we do not collect sensitive personal information like your Social Security number or passport number when preparing your name change package.
Do I have to complete and send all the forms at once?
Nope! We recommend following the personalized checklist that comes with your name change package. It will guide you step-by-step through the process at a pace that works for you.
Will completing my Hello, Mrs account impact my current driver’s license or passport?
Not at all. Filling out your Hello, Mrs account and completing the online steps won’t change your current documents. Your driver’s license and passport will only be updated after you submit the applications included in your package.
If you have travel plans booked under your current name, simply wait to submit your passport or driver’s license updates until after your trips. Just make sure the name on your ID matches the name on your travel reservation to avoid any issues.

I currently lease or rent, which address should I use as my permanent address?
We recommend using your current place of residence as your permanent address.
My spouse and I are both changing our names. Do we need to purchase two boxes?
Yes, you should. If you and your fiancé/spouse/partner are both changing your names, you’ll need to place two separate orders, each with a different email address. If you have any questions, just email us at admin@hellomrs.co.
Does Hello, Mrs work for both men and women?
Absolutely! Despite the name, Hello Mrs works for anyone who has a certified official marriage document or legal name change document. Every state has its own marriage and name change laws that you’ll need to follow, but we’ve got you covered. We just have female-centric branding because women change their name much more frequently.
Am I going to have to submit applications in person?
You can update your Social Security card, passport, and voter registration by mail. However, for security reasons, you will need to visit your DMV in person to turn in your old driver’s license or state-issued ID. As for your personal accounts—like banks, credit cards, and investment accounts—you can usually update those online or by mail. Your Hello, Mrs name change package will guide you through the entire process step-by-step!

I'm engaged. When should I buy Hello, Mrs?
You can buy a Hello, Mrs name change package anytime before or after your wedding. But you’ll need to wait until you get your official marriage document before starting the name change process.
Most couples get their official marriage document 1-2 weeks after the wedding. This is the legal proof that you and your spouse were married at a specific time and place. Your county or local courthouse issues this after your officiant files your completed marriage license.
Sometimes the marriage license and official marriage document are the same paper; sometimes they’re separate documents — every place is a little different.
If you have a wedding registry, you can even add Hello, Mrs to your list! Learn more on our site.

How do I file taxes before or after a name change?
Your name with the IRS is linked to the name on file with the Social Security Administration (SSA). When you update your name with the SSA, it automatically updates with the IRS too.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
• If you’ve changed your name with the SSA: File your taxes using your new name.
• If you haven’t changed your name with the SSA yet: File your taxes using your current name.
After you change your name with the SSA, don’t forget to update your name on any accounts linked to your Social Security Number — like bank accounts, credit cards, student loans, and more.
If you’re married but haven’t started your name change:
Check if you have enough time to update your name with the SSA before filing your tax return. You can find your local SSA office by visiting SSA Locator and entering your zip code.
Once you get confirmation from the SSA, use your new name on your tax return. If there’s not enough time, file with the name currently on your Social Security card.
If you’ve already updated your name with the SSA:
Use the name on your new Social Security card when filing. If you’ve applied but haven’t received your new card, contact your SSA office to confirm your name change status.
If you’ve already filed your tax return and are expecting a refund:
Wait to receive your refund before starting your name change. Mismatched names between the SSA and IRS can cause delays.
If you’ve filed your tax and don’t expect a refund:
You can start your name change anytime since your taxes for that year are already filed.
For more IRS info, check here. We also have a detailed name change tax guide available.

How do I update my voter registration in an election year?
Changing your name in an election year?
Here is a quick guide to make sure you are ready to vote:
Step 1: Check your state's voter registration deadline.
Each state has its own deadline. You can find yours on your state's election website. Most states even allow same-day registration on Election Day.
If you are close to the deadline and your state does not offer Election Day Registration, it is best to wait until after voting to start your last name change.
Step 2: Update your name with the Social Security Administration and get your new driver's license or state ID.
Once you receive your Hello Mrs name change package, follow the instructions to update your Social Security card and driver's license. It usually takes 2 to 3 weeks to complete.
If you have not received your updated ID before voting, most states will accept your certified marriage certificate along with your old ID as valid ID at the polls. Check your state's requirements to be sure.
Step 3: Update your voter registration with your new name.
After you have updated Social Security and your driver's license, register to vote under your new name before your state's voter registration deadline.

I haven’t started my name change. Is it possible to purchase Hello, Mrs before the election?
Absolutely! You can purchase a Hello, Mrs Box or Print at Home name change package anytime. Just remember, your name doesn’t officially change until you update your government documents. When you vote, make sure the name on your voter registration matches the name on your driver’s license or state ID.
The Voter Registration Deadline is near. What should I do?
If you’re close to your state’s voter registration deadline, you can still buy a Hello, Mrs package—but we recommend waiting until after the election to update your driver’s license or state ID to your new name. This way, you avoid any issues at the polls and can vote with confidence.
I’ve started my name change but haven’t updated the name on my driver’s license/state ID. What should I do?
If the voter registration deadline is coming up soon, play it safe and wait to update your driver’s license or state ID until after the election.

How soon after submitting my vote can I start my name change?
Will it mess my vote up
You can start your name change immediately after casting your ballot. Your vote counts as long as you were registered under your current name when you voted.

What’s the difference between a Marriage License and a Marriage Certificate?
• Marriage License: You get this from your local courthouse before your wedding. It says you’re legally allowed to marry. You and your spouse sign it before or after the ceremony, and your officiant returns it to the courthouse.
• Official Marriage Document: This proves you’re legally married at a certain time and place. The courthouse issues this after your officiant submits your signed license. Usually, couples receive it in the mail 1-2 weeks after the wedding.
Note: Sometimes the license and official document are separate, sometimes combined. It varies by county.

How long should I wait after getting married to change my name?
There’s no deadline! You can start whenever you want—once you have your official marriage document in hand. We do recommend waiting until after your honeymoon or any travel booked under your maiden name. If your ID and reservations don’t match, you could be turned away, so it’s best to be safe.
I have an international flight booked in my maiden name. Is it possible to start my name change now?
Yes! You can begin the name change process, but wait until you return from your trip before updating your passport. Just make sure your passport name matches your travel bookings. Your current passport remains valid until expiration, even if you update SSA or DMV before then.
Living Abroad: I’ve waited a long time to change my name. Can I still use my official marriage document?
Absolutely! Your official marriage document never expires. Many customers who’ve been married for years decide to change their name later, and it works just fine.
If I change my name, do I have to update my birth certificate?
Nope! You don’t need to update your birth certificate when you change your name.
We are planning a honeymoon out of the country. Should I change my name on my passport before we go?
• If you’ve already booked your flight: It’s best to wait until you return home before updating your passport. Your passport name must match your travel reservations or boarding pass to avoid any travel issues.
• If you haven’t booked your flight yet: We suggest booking your flight with the name on your current passport, and then waiting to update your passport after your trip.

Where do I mail my Social Security application?
You’ll need to mail your Social Security application (Form SS-5) and required documents to your local Social Security card office. You can find the address for your nearest office by visiting the official Social Security website.
Why can’t I change my name online?
We wish you could! But federal and state agencies have strict policies to protect your identity and information. That means certain steps, like getting a new driver’s license or ID, often require an in-person visit for verification.
Am I required to change my name if I am hyphenating my last name?
Yes! If you want to add a hyphen to your last name, that counts as a legal name change. Your official marriage document will be enough proof when making this change.
Is it possible to hyphenate my last name when changing my name after marriage?
Absolutely! You can hyphenate your maiden name with your spouse’s last name. Just make sure your official marriage document supports this.
Will my child(ren)’s last name change through my marriage or divorce name change?
No. Your child's last name does not change automatically when you change your last name after marriage. Changing a child's last name is a separate court petition. Hello Mrs kits are for adults 18 and over and do not include minor name change instructions.
Is it possible to move my maiden last name to my middle name and take my spouse’s last name?
Yes! Moving your maiden last name to your middle name and taking your spouse’s last name is considered a traditional name change.
Important: If you live in Arizona, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Washington, you’ll need to update your U.S. passport before updating your driver’s license or state ID with your new middle name to avoid any issues.

Is it possible to update my name and address on my license at the same time?
Yes! We usually recommend changing your address and name simultaneously when updating your driver’s license. This saves you an extra trip to the DMV. Just use your new address when completing Steps 1-3 in your Hello, Mrs account after purchase.
• If you already know your new address, include it in Step 1 so your government forms are pre-filled accurately.
• If you don’t have your new address yet, wait until you do before completing your info to avoid multiple trips.
Your Hello, Mrs account and package don’t expire, so take your time submitting and verifying your info. We won’t ship your Hello, Mrs Box until you complete Steps 1-3. For Print at Home kits, you can update your address anytime and redownload your updated PDF.

How is it possible to change my minor’s name?
If your child is under 18, changing their name requires a court order. The process varies by state and county but usually involves filing a petition, paying a fee, and appearing before a judge.
Hello Mrs packages are designed for adults 18 and over and do not include minor name change instructions. For help with a minor's name change, check with your county courthouse or talk to a legal professional.

Does my new last name need to be on my official marriage document?
Usually no. Most official marriage documents just show you and your spouse's legal names at the time of marriage, and that is the proof you need to start a last name change. They usually do not list a specific married name.
If your marriage document specifically says you chose not to change your name after marriage, Hello Mrs cannot process the kit. That would require a court-ordered name change, which we do not offer.

Got questions about your marriage document?
Feel free to email us a picture at admin@hellomrs.co, and we’ll confirm if it works for your name change!
How many copies of my official marriage document do I need?
You’ll need at least one original or certified copy, but having an extra copy can really speed things up. For example, you’ll need to mail your marriage document when updating your passport — and that process can take 2-3 months. Having a backup copy lets you keep updating your name elsewhere while you wait.
What is a certified copy of my official marriage document?
How do I get one
A certified copy is an official duplicate issued directly by the county or courthouse where you got your marriage license.
To get one, contact that county or courthouse office. Fees usually range from $5 to $20, and most can process your request within a few business days.
If you can’t remember where you got your license, reach out to the Vital Records office in the state where you were married.
If you’re worried about mailing your original document, getting a certified copy is a safe alternative. You’ll need either your original or a certified copy to start the name change process.

Does my official marriage document expire?
Nope! Marriage certificates don’t expire — they stay valid as long as you’re married.
I did not change my name on my official marriage document. Can I still use Hello, Mrs to change my name?
If your marriage document has a married name section and it lists your maiden name or notes that you chose not to change your name, Hello Mrs cannot process the kit. That would require a court-ordered name change, which we do not offer.

Does my divorce decree automatically allow me to change my name after a divorce?
No. Hello Mrs does not process divorce name changes. Our kits are only for a last name change after marriage, using a certified marriage certificate.
Is it possible to book a flight under my new name if my passport or driver’s license still has my previous name?
Your airline ticket must exactly match the name on your government-issued ID. So, if you haven’t updated your passport or driver’s license yet, book your ticket under your previous name to avoid travel issues. Your current ID will remain valid until it expires.
Heads up: Starting May 7, 2025, every air traveler will need a REAL ID-compliant license or other TSA-approved ID (like a passport) for domestic flights. REAL IDs usually have a gold or black star in the corner.
Getting a REAL ID isn’t required, but it’s a good idea if you travel often or don’t have a passport. Your Hello, Mrs package will guide you through how to get one.

I’ve updated my name on my driver’s license and Social Security card. Can I still use my passport with my old name for international travel?
Absolutely! You can keep using your current passport as long as its name matches your flight ticket and reservations.
If your passport is valid, there’s no rush to update it before travel. But it’s a good idea to bring a copy of your certified marriage certificate as a link between your old and new names.

What should I do if I already booked an international flight under my new name but my passport still shows my previous name?
If your ticket name and passport don’t match, contact the airline ASAP to see if they allow a name correction. Some airlines don’t, which means you might have to update your passport before your trip or rebook your flight under the correct name.
For expedited passport changes in emergency situations such as immediately pending international travel, contact your local congressperson’s office. They are usually able to help.

What happens if my name change is in progress and I need to travel internationally?
If your name change is still underway and you need to travel internationally, you can keep using your current passport with your previous name until it expires. Just make sure your flight reservation and all travel documents match the name on your passport. You can update your passport with your new name after you return from your trip.
Is it possible to use my Global Entry or TSA PreCheck if my name has changed?
Yes! If you’ve updated your name on your passport or other ID, you’ll also need to update your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck profiles with your new name. Until you do, be sure your travel documents match the name in those programs to avoid any hiccups at security.
Am I going to be able to travel during a name change?
Absolutely! The key is that the name on your airline ticket exactly matches the name on your photo ID (passport or driver’s license). If you’ve updated one ID but not the other, just book your flight using whichever name is on the ID you plan to use for travel. Your current photo ID remains valid until it expires.
What do I do if my passport is expiring or has already expired and I have travel booked?
First, contact your airline to see if they allow name corrections on your flight reservation.
• If they do, you can renew your passport with your new name.
• If not, renew your passport using your current (maiden) name so it matches your flight reservation.
After your trip, you can update your passport to your new name at no cost using passport form DS-5504, as long as your passport was issued less than one year ago.
For emergency situations contact your local congressperson’s office as they may be able to expedite your passport issuance faster than normal.

I never received my Hello, Mrs Box. Can you help?
We send a shipping confirmation email with USPS tracking as soon as your box ships. If your tracking says “Delivered” but you haven’t received it yet, it might be with a neighbor, held at a mailroom (if you live in an apartment or condo), or USPS may have marked it delivered early. It usually shows up within 1–3 business days.
If you still can’t find it, please email us at admin@hellomrs.co and we’ll investigate right away!

What is the SAVE Act (2025)?
A new bill called the SAVE Act was introduced on January 3rd to require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. We’ve reviewed it with our legal team and want to assure you that changing your name will NOT prevent you from voting.
Here’s what you should know:
• The bill requires documentary proof like a valid U.S. passport, birth certificate, or naturalization certificate when registering to vote federally.
• It restricts only those who cannot provide proof of citizenship — it doesn’t restrict voting based on name changes, marital status, gender, race, or ethnicity.
• If you’ve changed your name, just make sure your voter registration matches your current legal name with the required documents.
• The bill does not restrict married women from voting. Some women may need additional documents to verify their identity if their birth certificate shows a different name, but the bill itself doesn’t target married women.
